The Academy Awards: 80th Oscars (2008)

SEASON:

80th Oscars
The Academy Awards

Critics Consensus

Jon Stewart returns as a more confident host who seems more at home at the 80th Oscars stage, but the ceremony's short preparation after the Hollywood writer's strike is evident throughout a telecast stocked with redundant montages.

Critic Reviews for The Academy Awards 80th Oscars

It became obvious that the producers really were using pre-taped filler to compensate for the lack of rehearsal time imposed by the strike!

It was good to see Jon Stewart being Jon Stewart. He is shaping up to be a dependable Oscar host for the post-Billy Crystal years... He didn't bring down the house, but he kept it from falling apart.

In his second turn as host, Stewart escaped all cattiness by being fresh and in fine form, after taking off last year. As far as we're concerned, he can host everything every year.

At three hours and 20 minutes, it wasn't the longest Oscars of recent vintage. Lacking the best efforts of Hollywood's best scribes, it just felt that way.

A significant improvement over [Jon Stewart's] first outing in 2006, although it's hard to imagine anyone could've made much of an impact this particular year. The writers' strike had just ended, and a pervasive sourness hung over this ceremony.

Was that especially uneventful, Lynda, or will all Oscar ceremonies henceforth play as if they'd already happened once before in a galaxy far, far away? Not at all the Mardi Gras blowout I'd hoped for.

Oscar night is invariably judged by the performance of its master of ceremonies... Stewart did the best job of it since Billy Crystal in his prime. In his second outing Sunday night, he was just about as good.

Sometimes the sequel is better than the original. Host Jon Stewart's second at-bat as Oscar host was an improvement on his 2006 debut.

Nov 14, 2019 | Full Review…

[Stewart's] performance as host of the 80th Academy Awards show was like Jaws III, Rocky V and many other disappointing film sequels. He had an even lower energy level than he had when he first hosted the ABC telecast two years ago.

Nov 14, 2019 | Full Review…

Nothing seemed too inside, not the gags about the writers' strike, nor the obligatory joke about Hollywood supporting the Democrat of its choice in the presidential race. It was a night for all the seams to show, and Stewart threaded them deftly.

Stewart proved to be quite good at moving the ceremony along with good humor and just the right amount of incredulity.

Well, the major theme of the night was how many surprises there were. Even Roger Ebert is probably second guessing the Academy right now. But it was a memorable evening.
