The Academy Awards: 83rd Oscars (2011)

SEASON:

83rd Oscars
The Academy Awards

Critics Consensus

Anne Hathaway admirably braves her way through unfunny quips, while James Franco appears gallingly disengaged during the excruciatingly inert, completely unprepared 83rd Oscars ceremony.

Critic Reviews for The Academy Awards 83rd Oscars

All Critics (34) | Top Critics (20)

James Franco sported a permanent smirk that gave the impression that he'd rather be shooting General Hospital... It was a flat, even insulting, performance that belonged in a slacker movie, not a night to celebrate film.

As soon as the readymade segments gave way to live banter and, worse, audience interaction, Franco and Hathaway seemed increasingly flustered... It was painfully possible to watch in real time as they realized the show was slipping away from them.

It felt at times less like the actual Oscars and more like a hypothetical, prototypical example of an Oscars at which nothing really happens.

Despite a pair of pretty young hosts hired to bring a hip and relevant vibe, the show floated forward like a big old, hollow blimp -- a blimp driven by a cheerful princess and her mopey consort, Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

Despite the many worthy nominated films, the Oscarcast was painfully dull, slow, witless, and hosted by the ill-matched James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

It was like watching two people operating in alternate realities (or having two very different drug experiences), with the distance between them expanding and expanding as the show went on.

This year's Oscars clumsily catered to youth while also making gestures to Hollywood history that at best qualified as lazy, and at worst, totally embarrassing.

If Franco's intent was to hold up a mirror to the rest of us and show us how ugly we look when he pretend not to care, at least he accomplished that.

The kids aren't all right.

Felt particularly bloodless and slow -- and at the center of it all was James Franco, who did everything in his power to make it even worse.

Oct 29, 2019 | Full Review…

Immediately the droop began. And, with a few exceptions like the electricity between presenters and "Sherlock Holmes" co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, it never really picked up.

Oct 29, 2019 | Full Review…

In a year offering virtually no surprises among the top winners, the only shock was how quickly the show went off the rails, and stayed there in a sluggish slow dance of glittery incompetence.
