The Assets: Season 1 (2014)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Despite the occasional suspense and intrigue, The Assets ultimately misses the mark with its unoriginal take on Cold War espionage and rather predictable ending.

Critic Reviews for The Assets Season 1

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (10)

The Assets just can't get untracked, lumbering through its first two hours without any sense of purpose, style or urgency.

Not a brilliant effort, but worth a look.

Jan 3, 2014 | Full Review…

The real-life case was widely publicized enough that the outcome won't surprise most viewers. The opening scene, with Ames acting suspicious and guilty, acknowledges this. The point is the chase and to some extent the characters.

The Assets isn't flashy, but boy, is it effective.

It is suspenseful and tight, but not overwhelmingly violent, especially considering the subject matter.

Jan 7, 2014 | Full Review…

The Assets reduces the complex world of espionage to laughably simplistic terms: "We are both spies, and I caught you spying!" bellows a KGB brute to a captured agent. Nyet thanks.

Jan 6, 2014 | Full Review…

This is real-life spying, not a James Bond movie; adjust expectations accordingly.

Jan 6, 2014 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The Assets might have passed as merely boring, but following on the heels of FX's riveting Cold War series The Americans, it is hopelessly feeble.

Jan 3, 2014 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Paul Rhys is thoroughly compelling as the shabby-looking Ames-bumbling, maddened by fear as he senses danger, but with a touch, still, of prim arrogance about him.

Jan 10, 2014 | Full Review…

For all the talk this season about "limited series," The Assets offers the advantage of being exactly that - a self-contained story and temporary commitment.
