Bron/Broen (The Bridge): Season 4 (2018)

Season 4
Bron/Broen (The Bridge)

Critics Consensus

The Bridge's mysteries still smolder with morbid intrigue, but the series is feeling strained in a fourth season that is off-putting in its grisly imagery and directionless in its arc for the central characters.

Tv Season Info

Saga and Henrik are brought together once again to solve a series of macabre and gruesome murders that start when a high-ranking government officer, the director general of the Immigration Service, is stoned to death. Increasingly, it appears that the murders have a personal connection with the Danish police team that Henrik is at the very centre of.

In this series, much of the fun was supplied by Lars (Mikael Birkkjær).

I'm growing weary of The Bridge, a show now so overloaded with random savagery, it has long since ceased to be credible. The trouble is that it's simply not possible to be afraid at the same time as you're rolling your eyes.

It should have settled on its focus by now, surely, but it keeps introducing yet more characters.

It's been galling, grievous, dirty and brutal, worldly wise and deeply human; and I'm convinced that we haven't, yet, reached peak Scandi.

The Bridge, where Saga's autism is now being clumsily played for all its worth, has become monumentally annoying.

A tangled crime yarn is what we expect from Scandi noir but, on The Bridge, it's the histrionics of the recurring characters and their almost comically tragic personal lives that eventually strain credulity.

It is not the chance to see an avulsed limb or an aorta that makes The Bridge so compelling, regardless of Greer's worst suspicions. It is the possibility of restored order, redemption and, maybe, love.

It could have been a deflating start, but instead the writers and Helin turned it into a corker of an opener. Welcome back Saga.

God I'm going to miss her, and The Bridge.

The good news - surely - is that The Bridge is as dark and compelling as ever. Long live Saga!

May 15, 2018 | Full Review…

The series feels more gratuitous than it ever has with an almost unwatchable pre-credits scene showing a masked assailant stoning Denmark's Head of Immigration Board to death in a scene directly reminiscent of HBO series The Leftovers.

You have to hand it to those sadistic Scandis: they love cranking up the gore in their TV crime shows. So, each season of The Bridge has opened with a gruesome discovery.

Audience Reviews for Bron/Broen (The Bridge): Season 4

  • Aug 29, 2019
Great Nordic-Noir With Best Shape and Great Performance.
  • May 31, 2019
Although production, cinematography and the cast uphold the quality of the previous seasons, this final installment overlaods the plot and its many subplots to an almost incomprehensible tale; still, its hero Saga Norén will missed.
  • Mar 23, 2018
saga goes out with a bang not a whimper. another complicated noir murder mystery with a serial killer intent on leaving coded clues galore. by the time we get to the denouement it's time to think back on who died and why. still it's Saga that matters, and while not evolving (Thankfully) she does get some more insights in to those complicated non vulcan creatures.
