Rob and Samira Fisher, a young couple and new parents, relocate to Rob's childhood home on Ashfield Place, a quaint cul-de-sac in the idyllic suburb of Hinkley Hills. Their quiet life quickly unravels when a mysterious man moves into the house across the street -- a creepy Victorian that has been abandoned for over twenty years. After observing suspicious behavior and learning about local lore, Samira starts suspecting that things are not quite what they seem. Home alone on maternity leave, she finds friendship with a ragtag group of quirky neighbors who join her in investigatory misadventures that bring them closer to the dark truths about their town. As she digs deeper, Samira begins to uncover long-buried secrets and deadly threats that shatter Hinkley Hills' reputation as "The Safest Town in America." What starts as amateur sleuthing quickly escalates and, as danger creeps closer to home, Samira must decide how far she's willing to go to protect her family and her community.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A television remake that lightens up the original film's hellish concept, The 'Burbs proves to be a good neighbor thanks primarily to Keke Palmer's crack comedic timing.

A pleasant surprise and an unlikely success. Go to Full Review

Palmer hits punchlines with ease, but her real talent is to add an absurd, transporting energy to a story’s necessities. It really pays off here. Go to Full Review

Overall, this was a really fun watch. Keke Palmer is, as always, a master of her craft, and really balanced the drama and comedy of it all with ease and expertise. Go to Full Review

Somewhat predictable and disjointed towards the end (perhaps eight episodes were too many), it loses a bit of steam after its brilliant start, seemingly trying to set the stage for a second season. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Thanks to Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall’s chemistry and presence, The ‘Burbs is nowhere near the disaster I anticipated and is actually a decent binge. Go to Full Review

The show wields [motive] duality throughout the cast to keep us on our toes insofar as its rug pulls are concerned. It’s a smart murder mystery revision with enough twists and turns to lead us astray so the final reveal feels as surprising as it can. Go to Full Review

Adam R. @Rettig70 4h The original movie is the cult classic, this adaptation I came in with zero expectations and quite enjoyed this season. Is it the best show ever no, would I’d be OK without a second season probably. With that said if you’re looking for something to watch without any pressure it’s enjoyable just don’t take it too seriously, and don’t compare it to the original movie and treat it as its own. See more Kiana J @RT77839088 6h I love a dark comedy and Keke Palmer. Suburbia is a spectator sport; I feel so seen lol flawed but loved it I binged it in two days. See more John F. @mooovieMan 1d The most forced junk I’ve ever seen. Gave up at the end of episode 2. I hoped it would be better. But holy cow!! How much garbage can one person endure?? See more Mary J @Mimi4242 1d Loved this show. It did extremely well with reimagining the original script. I find the series to be much more appealing than the actual movie. Now I’m not saying that the original version of the burbs was bad, but in today’s culture of reimagining movies and shows. I believe this one nailed it. Would love a second season. See more Veronica S @vsheehan 2d Cute comedy , well acted, & always another twist coming to keep you wondering. See more Natasha R @Natasha_Ray 3d Initially, seeing the first episode my thoughts were, 'this show does have a slow start but I want to keep watching'. Almost every prequel, to sequels that follow, begin at a slower pace. For example, Rambo, Guardians of The Galaxy & The Twilight Zone episodes-the first ones weren't bad, they were all good, but they were preludes that led to the hype of the episodes/ movies that were to follow thereafter-so this is normal. This show is innocently engaging, entertaining, silly, suspenseful and overall a truly good mystery, thriller series. The actors flowed perfectly together on screen & I was very pleased to find absolutely no vulgar commentary, behavior or puns, especially given today's climate. Writers, producers, actors, investors and all teams involved, please don't allow a handful of broadly casted negative views to deteriorate the greatness of this show. Many viewers truly enjoyed the first season of "The Burbs". I would be so disappointed to see this show not be continued. See more Read all reviews
