Critic Reviews for The Grinder Season 1

All Critics (57) | Top Critics (29)

Rob Lowe and Fred Savage play brothers, which by itself requires a massive suspension of disbelief. Savage's Stewart Anderson is a lawyer, and Lowe's Dean Anderson plays one on TV. WORLDS COLLIDE.

[The stars are] an odd couple with potential.

There's a strong supporting cast, including Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Natalie Morales.

Rob Lowe exudes clueless charisma as Dean Sanderson, an actor fresh off eight top-rated seasons of The Grinder.

Sep 17, 2015 | Full Review…

The premise isn't unfamiliar, but Lowe and Fred Savage make terrific brothers, and lots of little twists keep the comedy coming.

Sep 9, 2015 | Rating: 3.5/4 | Full Review…

The Grinder is clever. It has a great time sending up the clichés of lawyer shows, while also reveling in them.

Lowe and Savage have a relaxed brotherly chemistry, and the show has fun playing with legal-drama conventions.

Sep 23, 2015 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It's probably the best half hour network comedy of the season.

Sep 22, 2015 | Full Review…

It works because, instead of running from them, it embraces and celebrates the conventions of broadcast TV. It doesn't try to be a cable series. In a strange way this season, that makes it the cool show.

Audience Reviews for The Grinder: Season 1

One of the most unique shows out in the last decade! Fred Savage and Rob Lowe had fantastic chemistry as brothers with opposite personalities. I'm still upset it was cancelled! Best comedy since Arrested Development!

    Why was this canceled?
  • Apr 28, 2017
I started watching this on Netflix recently and it is surprisingly funny. It's impossible not to laugh at the witty rhetoric between not only Rob Lowe and Fred Savage, but also Fred Savage and his on-screen wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis. It's a light, fun show. Really hope Netflix picks it up for a second season!

Should not have been cancelled. Rob Lowe is a delight. I couldn't stop watching the episodes. Sometimes the material got a little tired and gags got repetitive, but the cast and premise were spot on. I think that a second season could be even better.

So good, quality cast, Lowe and Savage's sparring is classic.
  • Oct 29, 2016
Though Rob Lowe has his wonderful Chris Traeger charisma, it's not enough to make this humorless series entertaining. It's not that the jokes are unfunny, it's just that there only seem to be 5-10 jokes in each episode.
  • May 04, 2016
This is the best comedy in a LONG time. It is also the only lawyer show that lawyers can watch. It's not that it is more realistic; rather, The Grinder revels in the fact that lawyer television shows are ALL completely silly. It's so meta, it's ????!
  • Apr 29, 2016
Love this show! I hope we get a Season 2.
  • Apr 13, 2016
Hilarious, if not a little trite. Just part of the charm though! It can be a little repetitive.
