The Pursuit of Love (2021)

Season 1
The Pursuit of Love

Critics Consensus

Though it's not always as clever as it fancies itself, The Pursuit of Love's spot-on casting and stylish proceedings prove a delicious enough diversion.

Audience Reviews for The Pursuit of Love: Season 1

I thought seriously about watching this series. Mortimer, Scott and James had me interested. Then I saw that schmucky chunk o' mediocrity Dominic West was in it. Hard no!

Okay. But, I am a bit weary of themes of romance obsession of the 1930-40's in the UK.
  • Aug 14, 2021
Lord Merlin was fantastic. Lily James put on a delightful performance in this charming period piece
  • Aug 09, 2021
One dimensional lead characters wander aimlessly through an unevenly paced story only to end flatly on a frustratingly trite note. Emily Mortimer is a complete hack, failing to capture even a moment of honest, intelligent female narrative. Dominic West is ridiculous without being amusing. The sets exude a Wes Anderson type silliness untethered to any sort of cinematic context. I'm still unable to fathom how the filmmakers managed to make the incomparably lovely Lily James appear genuinely unattractive in early scenes. Nothing the characters do or say makes a lick of sense. The final scene is so badly written I came away feeling annoyed, depressed and more than a little bit insulted.

The only reason to watch is Andrew Scott. Otherwise, ridiculous as a trashy romance novel but with pretensions to be more.
  • Aug 04, 2021
    Needs more Beecham and Scott
  • Aug 03, 2021
It sabotaged a great book to feed the vanity of a would-be writer/director who is an otherwise appealing actor. I hope they don't try to do the same thing to Love in a Cold Climate.

The episodes require the considerable and constant energy of the actor, Lily James as Linda, to propel this creaky vehicle forward. The standout performance is that of Andrew Scott as Lord Merlin; the screen lights up whenever he appears. And "Hicham" from *Call My Agent* has a lot of fun with his role as a suave Frenchman. But the satire of Mitford's novel does not really translate well in this excursion. Read the novel instead...
