Catherine de Medici, one of the most misunderstood monarchs of the 16th century, takes center stage in The Serpent Queen. Go to Full Review

It is far more successful and emotionally engaging when it focuses on Samantha Morton's often complex, contradictory and empathetic performance as the chaos queen. Go to Full Review
Judy Berman TIME Magazine 10/03/2022
It’s a delicate balance to strike, but Morton and Hill are both up to it, in a pair of excellent, poker-faced performances that set the tone for the entire cast. Go to Full Review

Filled with conflicted characters, intrigue, poisonings, torture, throat-slitting, religion and rock music, The Serpent Queen is a happy excursion into another time and space where the problems remain the same. Go to Full Review

I wonder if The Serpent Queen will settle into more conventional storytelling as Catherine becomes caught up in power struggles … But I’m hopeful that the magic will persist, as it’s easily the most original aspect of this series. Go to Full Review
Princess Weekes The Mary Sue 10/05/2022
The Serpent Queen, much like The Borgias, manages to play with historical accuracy and villainy of the figures while also highlighting their humanity. You can root for them, but you don’t have to agree with their actions. Go to Full Review

Anna M @HundZombi Jan 26 Outstanding writing and acting...., Samantha Morton as Cathrine De Medeci and Mini was so good as Queen Elizabeth. Never really cared for mini driver, he only struck me as a bit pompous... But I got to give her problem she was really really good Everyone on the show was stellar!! Does it follow history exactly, no however the creative liberties that the writers made was not wasted. One of the most engaging shows I've watched in a long time, went through both seasons in 2 days. See more Mel C @Mel24 Dec 9 Excellent! Samantha Morton was superb as were rest of cast… Minnie driver as Elizabeth 1, genius… the cast, music, dark but humorous drama, fabulous, loved the cinematography… See more Marlene A @RT73598001 Nov 8 I have one thing to say : Morton is excepcional! See more Jacob B @RT48293763 Sep 7 Anachronistic dialogue, attitude, language and music are used to give an modern edge to the biography of one France’s most misunderstood Queens (the actual biography on which this is based “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” I highly recommend). While this style of story telling is a delightful break from the ‘serious’ costume dramas of PBS fame, the deadpan reactions and the breaking of the fourth wall and the modern slang/vulgarities do lose their initial impact very quickly. “A little bit goes a very long way” is something the director ignored. Samantha Morton, as per usual, carries the material given to her seemingly single handedly. I would have loved to have seen her in this role in a more traditional dramatization. However, both she and the rest of the cast seem to be having such a great time telling the life story of a woman woefully unknown to most audiences, that you applaud what’s on screen and shrug off any quibbles with the storytelling style. See more Lol T @RT19643796 03/07/2025 How do I say it, it is a tick tock version of a historical drama series. Their dialog is straight from the modern streets, half of the cast should be hanged if they spoked so freely in that historian time. Not believeable. I am not asking for historical accuracy, but at least a feeling of it I mean castle is beauteful but not the right century, which is fine, same with dresses, but I can not forgive the dialog See more A. M @Thoroughbred9 12/27/2024 Magnificent, A tour de force. Addictive, stunningly beautiful, I loved everything about this film, both seasons 1 & 2. I pray to the SERPENT QUEEN for a SEASON 3!
