The Sixth Commandment tells the story of how the meeting of an inspirational teacher, Peter Farquhar (Timothy Spall) and a charismatic student, Ben Field (Éanna Hardwicke), set the stage for one of the most complex and confounding criminal cases in recent memory. It also focuses on how suspicions around Field’s relationship with Ann Moore-Martin (Anne Reid), Peter’s deeply religious neighbor, unlocked a series of chilling revelations.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Equal parts disturbing and enraging, The Sixth Commandment is a superbly acted recreation of a true crime that avoids feeling exploitative.

Despite the sadness it is also compulsively watchable. It is likely it would not reach such heights with a lesser actor than Spall in the central role of Farquhar. Go to Full Review

Spall is as good as -- or perhaps even better than -- you have ever seen him, which is not something to be said lightly. Go to Full Review

This show is so harrowing it borders on unwatchable. It also might well be the best television drama of the year. Go to Full Review

An excellent miniseries that, in its quest to be as natural as possible when it comes to recounting somber events, manages to be even more moving than perhaps it initially intended. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

With this calibre of stars and an exceptional supporting cast, Ben Field’s cold-hearted plots and manipulation are all the more shocking because we feel as though we know his victims so well -- we’re personally involved. Go to Full Review

This isn't a story about how two elderly people were dumb enough to fall for a scam that seems obvious to those watching from the outside. It's about how much we all long for love and companionship, no matter how old or well-off we are. Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Aug 21 An absorbing real life crime series from UK that proves that even without firearms, a motivated psychopath can inflict a lot of pain. It shows the hard work it was required to bring the criminal behind bars. Some of the flashbacks in the last half hour I thought were unnecessary. We have to commend the acting, not only of the actors on the right side of the law, but the two evildoers as well. See more faggghaggg Aug 16 Entirely predictable and hard to feel sorry for the victims. Sure, everyone feels lonely and wants love, and old "dogs" can't be blamed for not learning new "tricks"... but these two fell for the oldest trick in the book. A man of 69 and a woman of 83 wholeheartedly believing that a handsome man of 28 is in love with them? It was their vanity that killed them. I didn’t love this series as much as others—it felt a little too Lifetimey with disjointed pacing and heavy exposition. Especially the later episodes.
