Critic Reviews for This Close Miniseries
All Critics (16) | Top Critics (9) | Fresh (15) | Rotten (1)
But Stern and Feldman are more than enough reason to watch; they deserve to be in many more series and movies to come, but not before this series makes them heard.
It's an unconventional love story that needs another season to figure out what it really wants to be, and how best to get there. At least the most important elements -- or both of them, anyway -- are in place.
Even when the story sags here and there, This Close is a reminder of the creative value of more inclusive storytelling:
Directed by Andrew Ahn, the six 30-minute episodes are handsomely fashioned.
As Kate, [Shoshannah Stern] shifts ably from apologetic to fiery to vulnerable.
This Close is a raw and insightful portrait of two deaf best friends, but it's also messy, a little cliche, and ends with a questionable cliffhanger.
Intimate, graphic and immediately engaging.
A miscommunicated series about the myriad ways we can miscommunicate, This Close is farther from the mark it tries to hit than its title implies.
... the visuals and acting are so good, that it's worth watching just for that.
It's a frank and refreshing depiction of friendship, disability, and the different ways we can be intimate with other human beings. It's also entertaining as all hell.
This Close is groundbreaking, necessary, and the fact that it is a genuinely great series - down to its writing, performances, and subject matter - only proves that a platform for this kind of storytelling is long overdue.
It's refreshing to watch a show that doesn't rely on verbal dialogue; so much of This Close is Kate and Michael signing to each other, swiftly summing up emotions and grievances and jokes with a gesture or look.

Dec 20, 2020Such a warm storyline, and there is such a sweet dynamic between Kate and Michael. Unlike other shows when you have to watch them with closed captions on there is not enough body language a lot of the time to understand whats really happening. I love that there is a show you can easily watch and know whats happening that includes sign.

Dec 18, 2020I hate seeing unnecessary nudity/sex/bad language for no reason/purpose other than to try to get an audience. If I could I'd give this less than 1 star. This is what's wrong with Canadian television. And while I realize American made television has this type of content to some extent, it is not as graphic or distasteful just to get people to watch. Why does Canadian Television have to take it to the next level. Was it necessary to show the sex act of the 2 men in the first episode - could they not have gotten the message across by them kissing as opposed to having anal sex? I so hate Canadian Television.

Apr 13, 2018I absolutely love this series! My husband is deaf and i am studying to become an asl interpreter. this show, having real deaf actors playing deaf characters, really hits the nail on the head when it comes to deaf experiences and discrimination. it's very funny and realistic.
