It seems set to be an altogether warm, wonderful, brave, hilarious show that skimps neither on the comedy nor on the pressing of points of acute and chronic pain.

Just tune in. I promise you won't be disappointed.

With such a sweet central character, even an "ouch" moment becomes an "ah!" of empathy.

With buttery, wry humor, the series digs at the loneliness and isolation one can feel as a queer person under capitalism.

Mature comedy is honest, irreverent, and heartfelt.

At a time when every series is struggling to stand out and make a mark, Work In Progress does so quietly, beautifully, effortlessly.

"Work in Progress" isn't very funny, but it has plenty of heart thanks to co-creator Abby McEnany's performance.

"Work in Progress," co-written by Lilly Wachowski, moves along at a rapid clip, with some snappy one-liners, most of them uttered by Abby and by Celeste Pechous, who plays her best friend, Campbell.

I like the way [Abby] McEnany plays it short and sweet. The dialogue is crisp and some of her scenes are almost monologues, sardonic commentary on where she finds herself at that instant.

Work in Progress's debut is smart, full of heart, and very funny.

A lot of teachable moments come about so organically on Work in Progress, and I hope that becomes a mainstay.

In many ways, Work in Progress is a familiar entry in an established genre: it's an indie comedy by and about a clever, dyspeptic misfit looking for love.

The series never loses sight of its premise, though it remains bleak without beating you over the head.

This poignant new half-hour series has a real heaviness to begin with... But as the early episodes of the series progress, there's a kind of lubrication that allows the weight to travel more easily -- a bit like the sweeping of the ice in Olympic curling.

Happily enough, Work In Progress doesn't sand off Abby's edges to make her more palatable, nor does it leave her sitting on the sidelines while her conventionally hot friends get it on.

One of the most honest and funny shows we've seen all year.

You may not always know whether to laugh or cry at Abby's often self-inflicted dilemmas, but there's no doubt that McEnany is a discovery, a fresh voice in queer comedy who would demand to be heard if only she could get over herself.
December 10, 2019
Work in Progress is filled with such strong writing and nifty visual references, as Abby navigates that precarious tightrope between comedy and tragedy.
