A prolific American author known for his science-fiction work, Orson Scott Card is most closely associated with his 1985 novel, Ender's Game, and its sequels. Raised in a family devoted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Card has written various religious-themed texts but even more fiction books, first dabbling in the fantastical during the late 1970s. After the success of Ender's Game and its 1986 follow-up, Speaker for the Dead, Card often published multiple books per year, leading to various series including the "Alvin Maker" fantasy tales and the "Shadow Saga" stories, which take place in the same universe as the "Ender" novels. In 2012, filming began on the long-gestating movie adaptation "Ender's Game" (2013). As the film began to gain publicity, Card's outspoken views about homosexuality surfaced, with his controversial opinions threatening to overshadow both his writing and the production. Some, however, argued that Card's work should stand on its own, a point backed up by his considerable bibliography.
