The Replacements began in 1979 when guitarist Bob Stinson and his younger brother Tommy Stinson, a bassist, joined forces with guitarist Paul Westerberg-then a high school janitor-and drummer Chris Mars in Minneapolis, MN. The group's earliest incarnations went by the names Dogbreath and The Impediments, but ultimately changed its name to The Replacements. The band gained notoriety early on thanks not only to their musical talent, but also to outlandish behavior during live performances. By 1980, the band had signed with Twin/Tone Records, releasing their first album Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash (1981) a year later to critical esteem. Although their debut was marked by a distinct punk rock sound, future releases would experiment more with the budding alternative rock aura. After finding some success with this shift by way of their second album, Hootenanny (1983), the Replacements founded their new identity in earnest with the critically beloved Let It Be (1984). Shortly after the release of their next album, the likewise acclaimed major-label debut Tim (1985), the band dismissed Bob Stinson on the grounds of creative differences and difficult behavior; he was replaced by guitarist Slim Dunlap. The Replacements accrued successes off future albums, particularly with the song "Ill Be You" on the album Don't Tell a Soul (1989). Upon release, "I'll Be You" became the band's only song to appear on the Billboard Top 100 list, peaking at No. 51 and earning the top spot on each of the adjacent "Modern Rock Tracks" and "Album Rock Tracks" lists. Nevertheless, after only one more album-All Shook Down (1990)-the Replacements disbanded. Tommy Stinson, Westerberg, and Mars reunited briefly in 2006; Stinson and Westerberg reunited again, this time with additional musicians in tow, between 2012 and 2015.
