Reviews for The Heart of the World
Further propelled by a suitably frantic Soviet orchestral score, the insane rush of scratched, jumpy images compels you to keep your eyes as wide as possible for the entire six minutes -- even though you couldn't dream of absorbing it all.
Maddin's brilliant, delirious short is a spot-on pastiche/parody of a silent Soviet propaganda epic, full of phallic symbols, visionary heroes and splendidly emphatic montage.
The five-minute movie, which is only a fragment of the program, has the feel of a manic silent-film parody.
Conjures up a universe so vast and wacky that anyone can get lost in it.
