Both in terms of the activities and characters depicted, Rank doesn't truly manage to sustain interest for the course of its feature-length running time.

Seven days, 45 finalists, one champion: RANK takes us from the ranch to the rodeo arena for the fascinating struggle of the three favorites contending at the nationals in Las Vegas to be Professional Bull Riding World Champion. Competing in the toughest sport in the world, Justin McBride, a third-generation bull rider; Mike Lee, a 21 year-old born-again Christian; and Adriano Moraes, a two-time PBR champ, all bear the scars of serious riding injuries -- a crushed ankle, a subdural hematoma, a puncture by a bullęs horn that just missed vital organs. But nothing can stand in the way of their pursuit of a few adrenaline-fueled seconds atop a massive, uncontrollable animal for the ultimate victory: the big gold belt buckle to end all big gold belt buckles and a check for one million dollars. -- © IFC Films [More]

Reviews for Rank
That final night of competition is exciting stuff, capped by a heroic victory ride, but this is otherwise a plodding feature.
It offers both eye-opening rodeo footage and surprisingly interesting tangents about the bulls (some of which are worth up to $150,000) and the fleet-footed bull fighters (formerly known as rodeo clowns).
If even one [rider] were more conspicuously flawed, the film might be more compelling.
Rank is as thorough an examination of the sport of bull riding as you could hope to squeeze into 90 taut, well-organized minutes.
Hyams unflinchingly probes his protags' motives, from blinkered machismo to monetary gain, with a mournful, dissonant reserve that never devolves into judgment or pat conclusions.
I found it pretty compelling stuff, but whether or not Rank grips you depends solely on whether or not bull riding grabs you by the horns.
