See more Marco L @decatur555 3d Fred Claus has a fun premise and an excellent cast, but the film never makes the most of either. Vince Vaughn plays Santa’s rebellious brother, and with Paul Giamatti, Rachel Weisz, Kathy Bates and Kevin Spacey around him, you would expect something sharper, funnier or at least more memorable. Instead, the script is very simple, childish and predictable, telling the same Christmas redemption story we have seen countless times before. There are a few pleasant moments, and Giamatti makes a surprisingly human Santa, but the film is neither naughty enough to be truly funny nor warm enough to become moving. It can work as harmless Christmas background viewing, but with that cast and that idea, it should have been much better. There’s a light, playful tone that works well in short bursts, and some scenes do land with solid humor. That said, the plot feels surprisingly thin and somewhat directionless, never fully justifying its premise. It often seems like the story is just moving from one gag to the next without a strong sense of purpose. Even the title ends up feeling more memorable than the actual narrative. While it’s easy enough to watch and has a few laughs, it doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression. For me, it’s a mixed bag—funny at times, but ultimately pretty forgettable. I’d rate it a 5/10.
