Ole Bornedal's [i]The Substitute[/i] is one of the most enjoyable modern horror flicks I've seen, and another entry in Ghost House's [b]Underground[/b] film series that I ended up liking. This is the sort of film that Robert Rodriguez's [i]The Faculty[/i] should have been like. [i]The Substitute[/i] has a group of 6th graders getting the meanest substitute imaginable. She speaks down to the children (even making fun of one student's big teeth) and oversees them like she is some sort of drill sergeant. But all of this makes sense when the kids break into her house and discover (in an amusing reveal) that she isn't from this planet. Ulla, the substitute, is played with devilish delight by Paprika Steen. I loved her cold face throughout the film, and I love how much fun she had when she ridiculed the children. Just a spot on performance. Steen does a great job at bringing this character to life. Her performance, and character, reminded me a lot of the evil teachers that filled a lot of 70's and 80's b-grade films. Ulla ranks right up there with evil teachers like Ms. Togar from [i]Rock 'n' Roll High School[/i] as being some of the most loathsome teachers in film, that I can't help but love to watch. The younger cast in the film does a great job along side Steen's stern Ulla. Jonas Wandschneider plays Carl, sort of the central character of the younger cast. I thought he did a great job, especially during the finale confrontation with Ulla, in the film. The final battle had some of the best laughs in the whole film, and both Steen and Wandschneider worked so well together in it. The movie has some great special effects, great thrills and some pretty memorable imagery throughout its short run. There were some things I didn't quite get about the movie; the ending does this time-jump that I don't get, and I'm not sure I fully understand Ulla's silver ball thing. But [i]The Substitute[/i] reminded me of movies like [i]The Monster Squad[/i]. A great horror film that features children being the heroes of the story. A lot of us were afraid of monsters when we were younger, so it makes perfect sense that a movie like [i]The Substitute[/i] would have kids face those fears... in good fun that is.[/size][/font] [/left] [/center] See more Read all reviews
