Narrated by an "upstanding" citizen, this Southern melodrama begins in 1924 when a farmer becomes the first police chief of the small town of Delano. Meanwhile, a number of drifters turn up murdered in this apparently friendly, if insular, setting. Also, the black residents are harassed by members of the KKK and ignored by the largely indifferent authorities. The idealistic lawman investigates these matters and encounters resistance and, subsequently, is killed. After the Second World War, the first black chief is elected and finds a connection between the cases of serial murders and those of racial injustice. [More]
