I’m rewatching all the Disney films, and aside from the technical achievements and the occasionally emotionally powerful moments most of them are pretty meh. Cinderella might be the least interesting of all, with most of its energy devoted to mouse hijinks and a terrible message to young girls.

Few Disney films had as big of impact as Cinderella. Not only did this animated movie set the baseline for this classic folktale for multiple generations, but it also saved The Walt Disney Company from bankruptcy. Plus, it’s just a great movie. It’s got the right balance of heart, humor, and magic. Ilene Woods brings such warmth and goodness to the character of Cinderella. And we get not just one, but four villains, each vying for which one is the most wicked (with Lady Tremaine at the top). From the songs to the animation to the suspenseful and delightful ending, Cinderella is just the right fit.
