A paranormal investigator invites a trio of people to help him examine Hill House, a sinister family estate haunted by the angry souls from its troubled past. While Eleanor (Julie Harris) looks for an escape from the memory of her recently-deceased mother, she becomes increasingly obsessed with the history of the huge, ominous house. Reviews for The Haunting
The good news is that the disc presents the film in its original 2.35:1 (anamorphic) widescreen, and Wise's striking compositions put every square inch to use.
This is a horror movie with a brain, and something Hollywood made few of in 1963 and makes even fewer now.
Basically using lighting, camera angles and sound effects, (director Robert) Wise has created a frightening atmosphere that turns an old house into the incarnation of evil.
The best haunted-house movie, period. Director Robert Wise delivers big scares with superb cinematic restraint.
