Not all comedies need to become instant classics -- especially not when they're in the SNL-related canon -- so this film's aim is overambitious but true, earning it a rank far above Superstar or Black Sheep but below Tommy Boy or Happy Gilmore.

If you must see "Hot Rod," bring along something else to do--like a portable DVD player loaded with "Anchorman" or "The Waterboy."
