I’m usually a big fan of Kathryn Bigelow’s work, but this one honestly didn’t feel like her style at all. I kept comparing it to *The Lost Boys* since they’re kinda in the same vampire lane, and yeah… I just like *The Lost Boys* way more. This one felt really slow, and I never connected with the characters—some of them were actually kind of annoying. I get why it has fans, but it just didn’t click for me. Maybe the neck-slashing spur was a mistake, and it definitely has an obvious example of a deus ex machina ending, but it's really good. It's quite tense for a vampire movie. The attack scenes were always thrilling. It never gets boring. It is near dawn and Caleb asks for a kiss, and she bites him on the neck. Caleb's truck does not start and he walks home. When the sunlight hits him close to his farm, he starts to burn. His father Loy Colton and his sister Sarah witness a van that appears and kidnaps Caleb. He is introduced to Mae's family: the leader Jesse Hooker, his mate Diamondback, the cruel Severen and the boy Homer. In common, all of them are predator creatures of night that need blood to survive. "Near Dark" is an earlier work of Kathryn Bigelow, an original and gore road-movie. Mae and her family are never called "vampires" and they are very brutal and sadistic with their victims. Caleb is forced to live with these evil creatures. The soundtrack with the music by Tangerine Dream is another plus. My vote is ten. Title (Brazil): "Quando Chega a Escuridão" See more Jacob B @RT89309114 Oct 18 A bit slow-paced but still a good blending of genres, Near Dark scores a ton of points for its atmosphere, mesmerising score from Tangerine Dream, a show-stealing, fun-to-quote-fron Bill Paxton and a then-revolutionary reinvention of vampires. One that apparently relies on the fact that, unlike The Lost Boys and Fright Night, vampires are a completely unknown supernatural entity in the world of Near Dark, meaning no pop culture references for young Adrian Pasdar to use to figure out what's happening to him. Yes, this film has a desert-style setting, fitting the Western influence, making it understandable that the characters are technologically backwards but I don't think that explains why the vampires are apparently humble enough to avoid using such words. While later vampire movies in similar settings might make younger viewers understandably confused over what the big deal is, if you take a "you had to have been there" mindset, you'll find Near Dark to be a moody film that goes for a more "realistic", decidedly unglamourous approach to vampires that demonstrates why Kathryn Bigelow would go on to be one of the most prominent female directors out there.
