It's part romance and part political thriller becoming the later much more so in the second half. Costner and Young together are ridiculously steamy, electric, and have insane chemistry together. You can't look away and you can understand why this film was one of several so key to launching Costner into super stardom. He has so much charisma, sex appeal, and great physical acting too. He isn't as strong when it's just him without Young but he's still really good. So his the whole supporting cast. Really good direction and excellent camera work. The second half mostly takes place in the Pentagon also and it does a good job being a very memorable location but also keeping tension too. The twist is cool at the end but I don't think it really adds much to things. Like if you take it out not much changes but it's still cool and liked it. Also, because we see who committed the murder there really isn't much in the way of mystery but the execution is really strong and it really doesn't get convuluted at all. It does a great job keeping things frantic with the clock ticking also. It does keep you guessing despite knowing whodunit. Compared to 70's political thrillers this doesn't have that same level of paranoia or deep distrust and feels much more "modern" and summer popcorn movie type feel. I will say the romance feels stronger than the actual thriller that follows but it's still really good. They can feel like two seperate films but they work well together overall. Anyone who is a fan of any actors here, the director, romances, or thrillers should give this a try.
