When he returns to the ranch of his friend, Gaspar Melo (John Qualen), Juan finds that he's become a father due to a brief dalliance with one of Gaspar's twin daughters, Rosa (Yvonne de Carlo). Overjoyed, he goes to the church to begin arranging for a wedding. While he's gone, Don Domingo (Richard Hale), a cattleman who's contested the validity of Gaspar's claim on his ranch, attacks the ranch, burning it to the ground, and kills the old man and Rosa. Everyone assumes Rosa's child was consumed by the fire, although it had been rescued by a passing Indian. Wilde swears vengeance on the unidentified killers, but police chief Captain Rodriguez warns him against reprisals. When Tonya recognizes the voice of Castro (Lon Chaney Jr.), one of the killers, she contacts Juan, who captures the man and forces him to confess his involvement and to name the other members of the group. When Castro struggles, Juan is forced to kill him, and becomes a fugitive, since he has no witnesses. Average western includes fine camerawork from John Alton, an effective score by David Raksin (LAURA), and good performances from Qualen and Burr. [More]
