Chris S @Janomi 6d The Beverly Hillbillies has a fun premise, but it never does enough with it. Most of the comedy relies on repetitive misunderstandings, exaggerated stereotypes, and broad slapstick that quickly wears out its welcome. There are a few laughs when the movie leans into the culture clash between the Clampetts and Beverly Hills, but they're too few and far between. Jim Varney is an earnest and lovable Jed Clampett, and Cloris Leachman and Lily Tomlin throw themselves into the material with plenty of energy. Unfortunately, the screenplay gives most of the characters little beyond a single joke or personality trait, making them difficult to become invested in. The movie also leans too heavily on nostalgia, largely recreating the television series instead of finding a fresh angle for a new audience. While younger viewers may find some harmless fun here, the predictable humor and thin writing make it a fairly forgettable adaptation. Jim Varney,Rob Schneider and the rest of the cast were fantastic. My favorite scene is when Jethro is rebuilding his vehicle into a monster truck. Every actor in this movie is perfectly cast. This is one of the few times that the film mirrors the TV show. Just wish they made more family-friendly films like this one. Jim Varney was an excellent choice for the role of Jed. It is a good movie, although viewers may need to keep an open mind due to the type of humor that the casting team aimed to bring from the television show to the film.
