In 18th century Scotland, Robert Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) is the head of a proud Highlands clan that herds cattle. Rob takes a one thousand pound loan from the Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) to feed his people through the upcoming winter -- before his friend MacDonald (Eric Stoltz) can return with the money, he is murdered by swordsman Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth). Rob is forced to go on the run and eventually confronts Cunningham after he rapes his wife (Jessica Lange).

The first point to make about Alan Sharp's script is that it travesties history, bearing only the flimsiest resemblance to the facts of Rob's life... The second point is that it's one of the best screenplays of the last decade.

Brilliant! Michael Caton-Jones did good with this movie. Very well written and brought to screen. Great cinematography and visually stunning. The stellar cast all excels in character. Lots of action, intrigue, drama, suspense, good old revenge, emotion and intrigue. The settings are breathtakingly beautiful. Just about faultless in any regard, epic and classic movie

It's kind of a Braveheart lite, with Liam Neeson kicking butt even back then, and John Hurt and Brian Cox old - even back then. Tim Roth was detestable as the bad guy. Thumbs up.

Incredible movie, excellent writing, very little to no CGI, characters that make you really feel and a great ending. Would venture to say this is a lesser known Masterpiece on par with Titanic, and even Braveheart. Actors that actually make you dislike and like them personally, that’s the mark of excellence.

90% historical nonsense..rob roy was no hero as depicted in this..he stole cattle and ripped off other's regularly...the real Cunningham was not english but Scottish...they also never dueled nor ever met...Jessica langes Scottish accent was the true crime here...Neesons not much better...typical Scottish perfect, English all bad yarn...ignore all that and it's watchable
