In occupied Germany in 1949, American military officer Jefferson Pike (James Garner) wakes up in a U.S. Army hospital with no memory of the previous five years. A kindly military psychiatrist (Rod Taylor) and his coolly detached nurse (Eva Marie Saint) draw out Pike's last clear memories, which are of General Eisenhower's final briefing for the Normandy invasion in June 1944. Soon, Pike realizes that his doctor and nurse are not who they claim to be, and that he is in great danger.

A great premise if not the best execution: a spy/POW thriller starring James Garner as a WWII intelligence officer kidnapped by Germans and made to think the war is over. Go to Full Review

The premise, based on a story by Willy Wonka creator Roald Dahl, is as outrageous as it is ingenious Go to Full Review

Even when it becomes just another spy thriller, it's as well done as the best of the genre. Go to Full Review

I loved it's unusual story line and seeing a different take on WWII. The ending is predictable because it's based on real events but it's still so much fun to watch. Go to Full Review

Angelo C @RT29835010 1h Great film and very intelligently done. Makes you wonder that something like this can actually work. James Gardner Rod Taylor, and Eva Marie Saint were amazing. This is a definite must see film. See more Bill T @BillTreakle 06/06/2024 Great story od the events surrounding D Day. James Garner, Eve Marie Saint and Rod Taylor are superb in this film. See more Aldo G @RT54480587 05/29/2024 James Garner himself said the problem with the movie was that a knowledge of history ruins the movie's suspense. What remains is the suspense of seeing if the movie's good guys make it out of Germany alive. It could have been handled more effectively and the movie's final scene lacked the emotional wallop it was building towards. See more Paul G @RT67423558 11/03/2023 I guess it reminded me of Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner which was excellent. Unfortunately the huge setup to convince James Garner the war is over does not last nearly long enough and the film falls back on reasonably common ground. Its original but could have been so much more. See more Jeff B @RT54874440 10/16/2023 I put this on to watch Eva Marie Saint and it was worth the watch. James Garner, Rod Taylor and a surprise actor from Hogan's Heroes made sure the acting was as good as it gets. Before all the CGI and chase scenes with huge explosions, there was just good dialogue and cinematography. I'd recommend it. See more ashley h @ashleyhobgood87 10/02/2020 36 Hours is a fantastic film. It is about Germans who kidnap an American major and try to convince him that World War II is over, so that they can get details about the Allied invasion of Europe out of him. James Garner and Eva Marie Saint give terrific performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. George Seaton did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the mystery. 36 Hours is a must see. See more Read all reviews
