Opening with a musical tribute to consumer society, bemoaning the fact that everything, including happiness and fresh air can and must be bought, Fritz Lang's musical YOU AND ME looks at the struggles of the poor and formerly incarcerated employees of Morris's department store. Benefiting from the kindness of fatherly Mr. Morris, ex-burglars, safecrackers, thieves and gangsters are given employment and a second chance. When demure Helen and rough Joe strike up a friendship and eventually marry, Joe is forthright about his gangster past, but Helen fears that she will be rejected if she reveals that she too spent time in jail. Mickey, a small-time mob boss starts to frequent the department store, trying to lure the ex-cons back to their criminal life, but they stand strong. When Joe learns of Helen's lie, he becomes gives up and agrees to go in on a robbery of the department store. Meanwhile, Helen enacts her own plot to save her husband and their gang of ex-con friends. Lang's usual look at the social and psychological intricacies of criminal underground society is given a light touch with the melodramatic music of Kurt Weil all the while retaining Lang's usual visual invention and moral explorations. Underrated Fritz Lang film that makes up for its shortcomings in quirkiness.
