A battle with his brother for control of his land leads Prosper to retreat to an island in the swamp with his daughter Miranda and Ariel, a slave. There, Prospero learns magic while his brother becomes a Southern spy. Prospero creates a storm which triggers a series of events, including the washing ashore of a Union soldier who wins the heart of Miranda.
