The Malones live in the quiet seaside town of Northport, just outside of Boston. John (Keith Carradine), a writer, Lily (Farrah Fawcett), a painter, Larkin (Alison Pill), a 12-year-old student, and John's mother, Byrd (Jean Stapleton), are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of Lily's infant son, who was buried before he had a chance to be named. One day, a baby girl arrives on their doorstep, to everyone's dismay. The baby is accompanied by a note from her mother, who assures the Malones that she has chosen them for a good reason, and that when the time comes, she will return for the child, whose name is Sophie.
