City businessman Luo Yusheng returns to his home village in North China for the funeral of his father, the village teacher. He finds his elderly mother insisting that all traditional burial customs be observed, despite that fact that times have changed so much. Observing his mother’s intransigence, Yusheng thinks back over the stories he heard as a boy about his parents’ courtship. His father, Luo Changyu, came to the village as the new teacher and soon fell in love with Zhao Di, considered the prettiest of local girls. But their developing romance was curtailed when Changyu was ordered back to the city for obscure political "mistakes", and the would-be lovers were kept apart for more than two years. When finally reunited, they married and never separated again. Yusheng realizes that his mother’s wishes for the funeral must be respected, and so he provides money to hire men to carry his father’s coffin the many miles from the hospital to its final resting place in the village. On the day of the funeral, though, more than one hundred of Changyu’s former pupils turn up to carry the coffin -- and none of them will accept payment. Before returning to the city, Yusheng symbolically honors his father’s dearest wish: he spends one day teaching in the village school. -- © 2000 Sony Pictures Classics [More]

Reviews for The Road Home
A layered, delicately but surely romantic tribute to the simplicity and grace of a bygone era.
Celebrates a beauty and heroism around us that we often miss in both our movies and our lives.
Zhang Yimou focuses so frequently on Ziyi's face in extreme close-up that she sticks like a daguerreotype to your retina -- and then your heart.
A gentle, engaging narrative of constancy and devotion against all odds.
Of course, the past always looks better in retrospect, especially to those who have never done without indoor plumbing.
The film is laced with gentle humor, and its simple story is built on a sure foundation of humaneness.
This is a film that rescues love from the world of cliché and treats it with the awakening passion it deserves.
The Road Home yields its pleasures slowly, opening in wintry black and white before ripening into a miracle.
Zhang Ziyi proves in her film debut what a powerhouse force she is on-screen.
A moving love story that is as simple in its narrative gestures as it is rich in color composition.
A beautifully simple romantic fable set in 1958 China in which the lovers are never seen touching, much less kissing -- yet it can move you to tears.
The film is also a showcase for Zhang Ziyi, who is never less than enchanting.
Ms. Zhang's intensely concentrated performance conveys a current of stubborn, obsessive passion lurking behind Di's girlish wide-eyed innocence.
