Pre-dating Hitchcock's masterful STRANGERS ON A TRAIN by six years, this similarly-themed tale stars Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotten as star-crossed lovers who meet by chance, and have just eight days to unravel their true feelings for each other. Zachary Morgan (Cotten) is a returning G.I. who has been traumatized by his brutal experiences on the battlefield, while Mary Marshall (Rogers) is on a break from her incarceration due to accidental manslaughter. Marshall keeps her jailbird status a closely guarded secret from Morgan, believing he will baulk at her history, and lapse into ill health. With a strong cast that includes Shirley Temple in a supporting role, this is a convincing exploration of the "two-strangers-meet" genre. Richard Linklater's BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET movies doubtless owe a sizeable debt to the storyline, which plays out to a satisfying conclusion as the two lovers attempt to reconcile their differences.
