12/19/2013 I was really surprised by the degree to which this gypsy of a film succeeded at being a metaphor for its content, and agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers' applauding the courage this film exudes to tell its existential stories in really the only logical way: the illusion of witnessing--for the most part unapologetically, as if you're watching a continuum of unedited home movies--and seeing where things go. If you've ever been asked by a significant other to just listen and be there for them when they want to open up and express what's on their mind--without you feeling like everything has to make sense or have a solution--then you can connect to the romanticized awkward stumbling of these characters. Similar stories get ruined by trying to explain everything away, mapping everything out nice and neat with really stupid and typically half-hearted dialogue. While we hear Lucas narrating his preoccupation with sex and body image from early on, setting him up as the protagonist, we also hear from Andrea (concerned her tits aren't growing fast enough and mirroring Lucas' festering insubordination over established gender roles as if they might as well be just another meaningless authority figure). The insecurities, anxieties, and tentative electricity of these characters feeling out their way in a world that doesn't even seem to aknowledge their existence yet come across viscerally against an angsty, punky background of a soundtrack that is aggravatingly subtle enough to make the film's point on yet another level. There is real artistry here, and I hope others are patient enough to see it. Arty house, aesthetically sensual. Nice faded colour snap shot style. A little cliche in it's young teenager observations but lovely all the same.
