A science teacher attempting to win back his girlfriend during auditions for Macbeth finds out just how powerful the curse surrounding Shakespeare's popular play truly is when he inadvertently wrecks havoc on the production by breaking the cardinal rule of every theater. Danny though that by crashing the auditions while wearing his heart on his sleeve, his girlfriend would welcome him back with open arms. What the film has that so many of its impoverished cousins lack, is a fairly delightful personality, and a cute story born not of anybody's conflicted relationship with sex or obsession with urban life, but of an unbridled love for live theater.
Former Chicagoan Joe Gold wrote and stars in this not bad little comedy that is long on theatrical tradition and stereotypical characters (including a few gay ones). Not surprisingly, the material would lend itself very well to a stage adaptation.
...has its heart in the right place and is a likable little film that honors its theatrical influences.
...sweetened by the 'let's put on a show!' quality of the filmmaking. Theater lovers, in particular, should get a kick out of this slight but likable effort.
Never Say Macbeth is a movie for a narrow audience -- theater fans and stage actors. For that audience, it will be indispensable viewing.
