(B+) See more Kyle C. @kylekc Dec 18 This movie’s greatest strength is its dialogue. It’s consistently clever, funny, and surprisingly sharp for a film from 1940. The banter between the characters crackles in a way that makes it easy to see why this has become such a classic. Another big strength is the supporting cast. Felix Bressart’s Pirovitch steals scenes with physical humor and expressive reactions that never feel forced. And the subplot with Mr. Matuschek, the shop owner, ends up being unexpectedly moving. His personal journey of suspicion, struggle, and eventual humility turns out to be the emotional heart of the film and gives the whole story a real seasonal warmth that leans into the Christmas spirit without ever feeling schmaltzy. That said, the central romance hits differently. The core double-blind setup is charming at first, but the way it stretches out teeters into manipulation more than sweet misunderstanding. It still works overall, and the payoff is satisfying, but there were moments I found myself raising an eyebrow at how far it goes before the resolution. Plot twists aren’t hard to spot and the story is simple, but the film isn’t really about surprises. It’s about character, wit, and watching people grow and soften toward one another in a way that you can see coming but they can’t.
