A great deal of screen time is devoted to the false intellectualism and forced mannerisms of dinner party conversations.

Ema is a sweet and innocent young girl who turns the head of every man she passes. Her life takes a turn for the worse when her father forces her into a passionless marrage to a wealthy doctor. To make matters worse, she is relocated to the scenic but unfamiliar vineyards of Abraham's Valley. She scornes her new husband and threatens to kill herself rather than submit to his desires. Reviews for Abraham's Valley
When others would be retiring, Oliveira gives us movie after movie that begs to be indulged, with great affection, as the autumnal output of a codger deserving of, if not destined for, a Lifetime Achievement Oscar.
Subtle, elegant, enigmatic, this movie by the veteran Oliveira exercises a powerful grip.
This beautifully shot, slow-moving, talky meditation on a life of leisure led by an adulterous woman differs most radically from Flaubert's novel in its indifference to the middle class.
It mesmerizes, sometimes maddens and tests the emotional and physical reflexes.
