Buckaroo (Peter Weller) possesses an unusual number of professional skills--he's a neurosurgeon, race car driver, rock star, and comic book hero. While testing his jet-propelled Ford Fiesta, he drives through a rock, accidentally unleashing alien criminals from another planet who were imprisoned there. Suddenly, "Earth saver" seems destined to be added to Buckaroo's list of occupations, but not if evil Dr. Emilio Lizardo (John Lithgow) has his way. Less than successful in its 1984 theatrical run, W.D. Richter's wild, anything-goes sci-fi comic book comedy has developed a rabid cult of admirers in the ensuing years. [More]

Reviews for The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th...
Here are characters that look like they are from a first generation music video, speak like they are in a work of serious science-fiction, and sound like a stepchild to Huey Lewis and the News.
It was always worth tuning into Banzai's world, because the quirky sci-fi canon that it has created is essentially a cosmic game of Calvinball played by Richter and Rauch.
The wackiness is unified into something we can care about - a consistently earnest tone, the maintenance of which is no mean feat.
