While the movie continually teeters on the brink of abject corniness, it never quite topples off. And it doesn't hurt to have Robert De Niro, Rene Russo and Jason Alexander camping it up as cartoon villains come to life.

Rocky and Bullwinkle is directed by Des McAnuff, who presumably took on this chore after the failure of his imaginative, challenging version of Ted Hughes's The Iron Giant [which he produced]. Very sad.

In their natural pen and paint environment, Rocky and Bullwinkle shine. But they seem as dull as dishwater, and completely out of place, in a live action world. Hence, their Adventures never connect with viewers.

The first time I ever watched Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) was when I was having a hard time in life, I was smoking and vaping and drinking behind my parents back, my girlfriend broke up with me and dated my school bully, my grades were dropping very low. My parents dropped me off to my grandparents house, I didn’t want to go but I still went anyway. My grandparents only had a couple of DVDs but one stood out, Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) I’ve heard of the original 60s cartoon. I played it on the DVD player and at first it started off boring. But as it kept going, I started to laugh. And once it ended, I felt like I wasn’t sad even though I was having a hard time at the time. Suddenly I didn’t care that my girlfriend broke up with me, now I stopped smoking, vaping and smoking. Now it is flawed, and some reviews in this platform don’t think it’s good, and it’s okay to have different tastes than me but personally, it was the greatest movie I have ever watched in my life in this planet.

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle is a noble but ultimately uneven attempt to translate Saturday-morning nostalgia into a big-budget spectacle. I love how game the cast is here, with Robert De Niro and Rene Russo clearly having a blast leaning into the campy villainy of Fearless Leader and Natasha. However, despite the high energy, the humor feels forced and it’s overall too corny to maintain its momentum. It’s not that they didn't understand the source material, it's more that the material doesn't lend itself well to a live-action film, as the whimsical, flat aesthetic of the original cartoon loses its charm when grounded in a three-dimensional world.
