This fourth chapter comes off as the first fully postmodern Alien film: not Alien multiplied or cubed, but synthetically reawakened, groggy enough to sleepwalk through our memories of the first three, as in a dream.

In ALIEN 4: RESURRECTION, the fourth installment of the wildly popular series of science fiction movies that began with ALIEN, a drop of Ellen Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) blood spawns a part human, part alien Ripley clone. Now that Ripley is dead, the clone has fallen into the hands of government scientists who want to harness the Ripley clone's breeding powers. When the new and improved Ripley lands on a ship of androids, her mere appearance sets the action rolling. Stepping in to help put a stop to the madness is tiny android named Call (Winona Ryder), as well as the ship's fellow crew members (including Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman, and Michael Wincott). For the first time in his feature film career, French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (DELICATESSEN, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN) takes sole directorial credit, leaving his partner Marc Caro to concentrate on artistic direction. ALIEN RESURRECTION has far more in common with ALIEN 3 than the series' first two parts, most notably due to its overtly humorous tone. Jeunet also applies his traditional Gothic visual style to the slimy, effects-heavy riot, resulting in a work that is as reliant upon style as it is substance. Scripted by Joss Whedon, creator of the Warner Brothers television show, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, the film marks an energetic and flashy transition to Hollywood film making for Jeunet. [More]

Reviews for Alien Resurrection
After the disappointing Alien 3, this fourth film in the franchise represents a marked improvement, but it fails to match the level established in the first two films.
Un de ces films dont il faut savoir s'imprégner de l'idée de départ pour être en mesure d'en apprécier les ébats à leur juste valeur.
Jeunet and Whedon deliver the alien-attack scenes with a spin and a wink.
Has more visual flair than any of George Lucas' Star Wars films, and at times is almost as fun.
Poor Sigourney Weaver! Why does she succumb to the temptation of making these movies?
It's time they quit killing the aliens, and just killed the Alien series altogether. ... How the mighty have fallen.
Moviegoers who expect more surprise and mystery from the grisly and suspenseful sci-fi "Alien" series will be disappointed.
The much-maligned last part in the Alien quadrilogy should be approached as the comic book actioneer that it is.
...it's two hundred years down the road from Alien 3, and Ripley is long gone. If only. (Alien Quadrilogy)
Great effects, dismal story. Sigourney phones in a paycheck. Why is Ryder even in this? Ron Perlman is the only bright spot in a forgettable cast.
