Cameron Crowe's career trajectory reads like a true Hollywood story--he started out as a 15-year-old writing for Rolling Stone magazine and eventually ended up writing, directing, and acting in movies. His poignant writing style reflects the nostalgia and humor of an era, with bits of pop culture and musical history and trivia woven in. This has proven to be a highly successful formula, as in the 1989 emo love story SAY ANYTHING, and the '90s grunge rocker hit SINGLES. Crowe's ALMOST FAMOUS is a semiautobiographical account that tells the story of a teen journalist, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), who goes on the road with an up-and-coming rock band called Stillwater. Though Miller's mentor, legendary rock critic Lester Bangs (portrayed with humor and heart by Philip Seymour Hoffman), cautions him not to befriend the musicians, Miller takes it a step further and befriends both the band and the Band-Aids--the girls who hang around with the band because they love the music. Miller is in for a wild ride around the country, to thrilling concerts and debauched backyard parties, living the life many 15-year olds dream about. He discovers that beneath the glittery façade of rock stardom are sometimes bittersweet life lessons and mild doses of heartbreak. More impacting are the friendships he finds with his glamorous travel companions. Newcomer Fugit is the perfect William Miller: baby-faced, slightly gawky, and an awestruck observer. Kate Hudson sparkles as Penny Lane, the leader of the Band-Aids, and Frances McDormand delivers a stellar performance as Elaine, Miller's protective and mildly paranoid mother. In the tradition of SAY ANYTHING and JERRY MAGUIRE, Crowe's coming-of-age tale is intelligent, well-written, and memorable. [More]

Reviews for Almost Famous
Neither as outright funny nor as resonant as it seems to want to be.
None of the non-musical components on the screen matched the excitement of the music.
A blissfully sweet coming-of-age movie in which everyone, young and less young, comes of age.
This is the celluloid version of a glossy magazine feature -- easily perused, modestly entertaining, the kind of piece designed to please the publisher by not taxing (or offending) the reader.
A winner because Crowe dares to wear his heart on his sleeve. For this movie at least, he's with the band.
As a director [Crowe] has an extraordinary gift for drawing out rounded, complex performances even in supporting roles and for indicating the fine emotional shadings in the relationships among his characters.
What moments it has! With his pitch-perfect ear for the music swirling through every scene, Crowe seems to hear the words in his characters' hearts.
Crowe is so good on mood and milieu that when Elton John's bubblegum ballad 'Tiny Dancer' swells on the soundtrack, in this context it sounds like a hymn.
Story threads weave tightly together without effort or artifice, and line after line of dialogue is naturalistic, clever, or perfectly timed.
What a shame things should fall short, given how many enjoyable moments can be found.
He ... shows us what lies beneath the coolness -- the raw, vibrant longing and the aching legacy of things long past.
It's a lot like being invited to a friend's house to watch home movies, but he keeps the real stuff locked up and shows old programs he taped from television instead.
The message is as stillwater clear as it is irresistibly romantic. By virtue of its transcendent graces, music pulls us above the din of our own pettiness.
Panoramic yet cozy, enthusiastically glib, Almost Famous suggests a universe of interlocking sitcoms.
It offers the kind of top-notch entertainment that has been sadly lacking in multiplexes this year.
Hollywood filmmaking at its best, brimming over with feeling, texture, spirit, and several kinds of keenness that transmute experience into big pop myth.
The entire movie is as consequential as the Raspberries' greatest hits.
