Alicia 06/08/2022 Love this childhood favorite! See more Colton T @RT88563968 May 4 Now, I know this film is largely forgotten today, but I just want to say, why do people call this film too "dark"? I recently rewatched it, and yes, it does have some dark elements, but the film is tonally inconsistent. the films opens with a dark scene, where anti-semitic cats destroy the Mousekewitz family's home, and is almost instantly followed by "There Are No Cats In America", which is an entirely lighthearted song, and almost IMMEDIATELY after this song, there is a dark scene where Fievel is seperated from his family during a thunderstorm at sea, and is almost IMMEDIATELY followed by "Never Say Never", yet another lighthearted song. The only song in this movie that can be considered "dark" depending on your view is "Somewhere Out There", but nearly every one song is lighthearted, completely defeating the purpose of the tone. Even though it isn’t as polished as a Disney movie, and even though it’s a bit of a downer, there’s something endearing about this little animated movie that could. My heart goes out to Fievel and his family every time I watch it. Also, the music is great. From James Horner’s impressive score to the catchy little ditty, "There Are No Cats in America" to the touchingly beautiful, "Somewhere Out There," there is a lot of emotion brought to the plot. And who doesn’t love Dom DeLuise as Tiger? It may not be flawless, but An American Tail is a classic. Like many family animated movies of this time it's suprsingly dark and scary at times for a "kids" movie. The main character is super likeable, charming, and very easy to get behind. While no one else has that much depth to their character, they are all super memorable thanks to how well their drawn and the voice acting is filled with character. Dom DeLuise as Tiger especially is a standout, easily one of his best films. This is a case study on exection making up for lack of substance on the support side. The animation is gorgous and capture that turn of the century look of NYC perfectly you see in something like The Godfather Part II or Gangs of New York perfectly. Filled with detail, sludge and smog like but never lifeless, and beautiful at the same time. The cat scenes especially are terrifying and like a horror movie. The music is super catchy, memorable, and well sung. And in just 80 minutes this is a brisk adventure that never drags. We stay super focused on Fievel the entire way. Granted the tone can move between fear and kid like Singin In The Rain moments on a dime but underneatht the whole adventure a underlying commentary of the American Dream is underneath. The dream is not all "No Cats and streets made of cheese" but unpredictable and can turn on a dime. Just like the movie does. Everyone should give this a try once. See more Read all reviews
