See more Matt L @Mattliptak Jan 12 Pacino is solid, as always, playing the morally tortured defense attorney, but the movie can’t decide what it wants to be. One minute it’s a grim indictment of a corrupt legal system, the next it veers into borderline sitcom territory. Jeffrey Tambor is almost playing this for laughs, Jack Warden is reliably excellent but used more as dark comic relief than dramatic ballast. For a late-’70s film, it’s not terrible, but it feels stitched together from competing ideas — satire, farce, courtroom thriller — none of which ever fully land. John Forsythe is effective as the slimy, untouchable judge, easily one of the more believable "villains," but even that storyline never quite delivers the punch it promises. The truth is simple: the movie is remembered for Pacino screaming "You’re out of order!" and not much else. That scene is electric. Lawyers bend rules daily. Judges trade favors. One client faces prison for a minor traffic violation because the system needs a win. Another guilty defendant walks free after political pressure. Director Norman Jewison shoots these scenes with zero filter. The facts speak for themselves. Pacino plays Arthur Kirkland, an attorney who hates what his job forces him to do. He explodes in the famous courtroom speech. Every word hits because the buildup earns it. Viewers feel the rage he held back for two hours. The American Film Institute placed that outburst at number 24 on its list of greatest movie quotes. 10/10. Watch it tonight.
