Blake- N @PBSAniDom Apr 19 Annapolis (2006) is an outright abysmal attempt at a military drama that fails on nearly every level. The film tries to present a gritty, inspirational story set at the Naval Academy, but instead delivers a dull, predictable narrative filled with clichés and forced conflict. The boxing subplot feels completely out of place and ends up overshadowing what could have been a more authentic look at academy life. James Franco gives a flat, unconvincing performance, and most of the supporting cast doesn’t fare much better. The characters are thinly written, making it hard to care about any of their struggles or achievements. On top of that, the film’s tone is inconsistent, jumping between melodrama and sports movie tropes without focus. Overall, it’s poorly executed, uninspired, and forgettable. A rare 0/10. At times he feels oddly detached from the role, making his character’s journey less convincing than it should be. Still, the movie finds some footing in its themes of perseverance and the struggle to prove you belong in a place that seems stacked against you. While it’s far from the most impactful boxing drama—especially compared to classics of the genre—it remains a reasonably entertaining watch. The Naval Academy setting adds a different flavor, and Tyrese Gibson brings solid intensity as the antagonist, helping keep the central conflict engaging. My family would watch it together over and over. It's pretty good. I suppose it's not very original, but seeing as I have no other reference, that works for me. See more 08/11/2022 This was a dismal, embarrassing and juvenile attempt at filmmaking from virtual every possible angle. The sole enjoyable moment of the movie was Vicellous Shannon's line about being not only the president of his weight-gain club, but also a client. The plotline was disjointed and indecisive. Presented as a military seafaring story, it quickly devolved into a bizarre amalgam of "Full Metal Jacket" meets "Rocky" littered with good actors doing terrible jobs, each acting as if they were delivering soliloquys in a high school chamber theater production starring only themselves.
