Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming up rich emotional intimacy, not without naturally humorous and awkward moments. Vivid, painterly images and the yearning melodies of composer Mychael Danna complete the artistry of the film. [More]

Reviews for Antwone Fisher
A fine film that proves the past is never too bleak -- or the future too hopeless -- to discover a productive new life, and a home and family to share it.
Denzel Washington gives a sensitive yet powerful performance as a Navy psychiatrist, and newcomer Derek Luke is a pleasant surprise as the title character.
For sure, Antwone Fisher is corny. But it's corny in a way that a Hollywood movie about a boy who just wants to go home ought to be corny.
Watchful, flinty, unexpectedly vulnerable -- and so cathartic it could wring tears from a stone.
Marks a strong directorial performance by Washington, who foregoes tricky maneuvers and allows the emotions and details of his story to carry the day.
In his debut as a director, Washington has a sure hand. His work with actors is particularly impressive.
Luke is one actor who is sure to be with us in a big way for years to come.
While the film is rated PG-13 for language and the brawling, this is one film that high school teachers can use as a teaching tool without any rationalization.
Luke's performance as Antwone is strong and stirring enough to rekindle that vintage phrase 'a star is born.'
Earnestly inspirational, conservatively moralistic and little on the bland side.
Why this story? As it stands, it's the story of a clean-cut kid who becomes an even nicer clean-cut kid.
Well-meaning to a fault, Antwone Fisher manages the dubious feat of turning one man's triumph of will into everyman's romance comedy.
Washington the director couldn't have made a smarter choice for the title role -- or chosen a more appropriate project to make his own.
A film that begins with the everyday lives of naval personnel in San Diego and ends with scenes so true and heartbreaking that tears welled up in my eyes both times I saw the film.
There's nothing in either the conception or execution to lift it above a TV-movie tear-jerker.
An Oscar-worthy, emotionally honest, feel-good saga with a universality that stands out in a season of singularly depressing and cynical Hollywood product.
