Mark B @Thelaser555 2d Coppola shook the world of cinema when he made this but now watching AN in 2026, the film is like some terrible, over-long bad dream. It's also depraved and disgusting. Spraying innocent Vietnamese villagers (women and children included) in the back with machine guns from the safety of their helicopters, rightly portrays the US as monsters- not to mention the use of widespread napalm. Duvall's notorious line 'I love the smell of napalm in the morning' as he walks around in a cowboy hat sizing up the swell of the sea for a surfing session with his tongue-wagging soldiers is just plain stomach churning. There is nothing nice about this flick. It's dirty and ludicrous as we watch the once-great Brando in the shadows (when he finally makes an appearance) mumbling and moving around like some tainted buddha. Sheen's mission is to kill him. Why bother? Almost 60,000 US soldiers and 2 million Vietnamese died in this ridiculous war. Apocolpyse Now still doesn't tell us why. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this epic about the Vietnam War is truly an experience that you’ll never forget. Amazing Cinematography, Excellent battle scenes, and the feeling of an LSD trip is what you’ll get when watching this. Amazing performances from Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper. If there was a war film that depicted the brutality of war and how it could affect a soul… this is it. There isn't anything new that can be said in a praise for this movie. This is one of a few best war movies ever made, and this is simply one of the top 5 movies ever made. I don't even know where should i start to praise this movie. This movie is probably one of the cases where you not only "love it" or "hate it" - "Apocalypse Now" won't leave anyone, and by anyone i mean casual or true movie buff in some way "unmoved" - it has everything (well maybe except for a love story). Overall, i saw the original cut like 3 or 4 times, and 2 times "Director's Cut". For all rookies of "Apocalypse Now" I would recommend the original cut first, and after this masterpiece will become a part of your mind, then you can see "Director's Cut" - it is a deeper road into a rabbit hole. It's a unique adaptation of the classic novel "Heart of Darkness", that changes the Congo setting to the Vietnam War. The film is excellently directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The cinematography is fantastic. The movie has an awesome cast. Marlon Brando gives an insane performance as the fat bald Colonel Kurtz living in exile as a painted face cult leader. The movie has amazing landscape cinematography, with striking imagery. The movie questions what separates Kilgore from Kurtz with insanity and murder. The deeper they travel up the river, the crazier the soldiers get in the war zone. It's a very intense climax when they finally reach Colonel Kurtz's dystopian cult temple shrine hideout and the captain has to confront Colonel Kurtz in darkness. The film is a fascinating character study and cautionary tale about how the normal human mind can become corrupted and drained of its humanity during wartime. See more Read all reviews
