First-time missionaries Martin (Aidan Quinn) and Hazel Quarrier (Kathy Bates) travel to a small town in the middle of the Brazilian jungle in order to convert the natives. Upon their arrival they meet Leslie (John Lithgow) and Andy Huben (Daryl Hannah), a more experienced missionary couple, who lead the American Evangelical Society. As the Quarriers set out for their remote and possibly dangerous mission outpost, they face the native Niaruna Indian tribe and find themselves deeply immersed in the foreign world of the jungle natives.
