Suzette (Goldie Hawn) and Vinnie (Susan Sarandon) were groupies in their heyday, partying with the likes of Frank Zappa (who dubs them the Banger Sisters), Jim Morrison, and virtually every other rock star and roadie that passed through Los Angeles. Twenty years later, Suzette is a bartender who finds herself too old to stay in the Los Angeles rock scene. Distraught, she heads to Phoenix in search of her former best friend, picking up neurotic and quirky Harry (Geoffrey Rush) at a gas station along the way. But when Suzette arrives in Phoenix, she is surprised to find that her once wild friend may as well be a different person. Married to a lawyer with political aspirations and the mother of two teenage daughters, Vinnie is now LaVinia, a refined, cultured pillar of the community. With Suzette back in town, LaVinia is confronted with her past and finds that she must make peace with it to fully embrace her true self. Hawn and Sarandon are well cast, and Rush is a scene-stealer as a wounded man who finds new inspiration in Suzette. Writer Bob Dolman makes his directorial debut with THE BANGER SISTERS. [More]

Reviews for The Banger Sisters
So insipid it may turn even superannuated hippies into raging neocons.
There's a good movie to be made about fifty-something former groupies, but The Banger Sisters is not that movie.
There are many things that solid acting can do for a movie, but crafting something promising from a mediocre screenplay is not one of them.
From opening to closing credits, there isn't a single genuine moment.
Like those to Rome, all roads in The Banger Sisters inevitably lead to a joke about Hawn's breasts, which constantly threaten to upstage the woman sporting them.
It's an audience flattering Hollywood movie about the redemptive powers of vulgarity and joy of letting it all hang out. Even if it isn't yours.
What The Banger Sisters offers in place of an eloquent statement is the charm of two actresses at the top of their game in flashy roles and a smart script that's decidedly more coarse than sentimental.
[Sarandon] and Hawn click with a lovable, kinetic kick -- much as Sarandon and Geena Davis did in Thelma & Louise.
Hawn, Sarandon and Rush are, quite simply, a fabulous trio of originals. They bring far more to The Banger Sisters than it deserves.
A shrewdly observed, relatively subtle and gentle satire that exudes genuine empathy and understanding for all its varied characters.
It's both sitcomishly predictable and cloying in its attempts to be poignant.
Dolman confines himself to shtick and sentimentality -- the one bald and the other sloppy.
Hawn and Sarandon hit the ground running, and are so funny and goofy that they distract and delight us.
Watching the two women rekindle their relationship is the great pleasure of the movie, particularly since it looks as if Sarandon and Hawn had a blast together.
Hawn and Sarandon manage to pull off the transition back into party girls, if barely. I'm just glad Bea Arthur and Betty White passed on the script.
