See more R T @crillovision 10h There was a time when Kubrick managed to somewhat entertain me but as his career progressed he became so obsessed with detail and framing and lighting and lengthy lengthy views of everything that the films became like taffy that could be pulled and pulled and pulled. This one is the absolute proof of that too. The final scene where the title guy is writing out a message very very very slowly pretty much sums up the movie you just sat through. He continues writing while we hear the words and it still goes on and on. The plus side is that it is a truly beautiful creation - the ducks in the meadow look perfect, the horses are stunning, the costumes undoubtedly authentic somewhat. The acting overall is passable but the leads are flatter than flapjacks and the beating a dead horse syndrome never leaves the building. The film does not seem to care if you remember the story line or be concerned with that. It is lovely to look at but a real ordeal. I set a record for yawns at the cinema. But I have never met anyone who would put "Barry Lyndon" as their favorite film of his. This story mirrors what would become the go to formula for music biopics. It's a rag to riches story, followed by a riches back to rags story. In typical Kubrick form, it is very well shot. But no way around it, this movie is long and you feel that runtime. There is a lot of narration through the story, which normally I would mark down as a negative for a movie. But here, the narrator was my favorite character, because he moved the story along. It's an extended, stately immersion in a lush, bygone world of English green and luxury, with breathtaking settings and score, and a plot centered on an unscrupulous, 'flaky' anti-hero. Ryan O'Neal, like Tom Cruise in "Eyes Wide Shut," is an ingenue, stumbling through life, but with a much longer decline into a miserable, well-deserved ignominy. He encounters a fascinating cast of characters along the way, all of whom don't miss him a bit when he's gone. So full of detail, that even after a multiple viewings, I'll catch something I didn't notice before. Another Kubrick masterpiece.
