See more Kenley M @RT36674505 05/28/2025 First of all - this was the very first movie I ever saw outside my home in a theater. I was 2 years old and taken to the theater by two teenage girls - Susan and Vickey Bristow (my next-door neighbors). I enjoyed every moment because of the science - skepticism of people refusing to believe the testimony of the main scientist who first witnessed the monster - the hilarious "diving bell" scene where Cecil Kellaway goes into a monologue about the wonder of the monster sighting just before being swallowed up - the clever section where military people are getting sick in the streets when pursuing the monster due to radioactivity/disease or whatever it was - and the classic idea of showing something that is a tourist attraction (in this case the props included in the final scene where the monster is destroyed). As an adult I went back to see many movies when offered on various networks or VHS - and later on digital media. I was amazed at how most of these movies I thought were great were absolutely terrible "B grade" films and obviously it was my simple minded and inexperienced perspective of immature childhood thinking that enabled me to enjoy these films. However, some of the films were even better as an adult watching them the second time and this was one of them. Understand that despite the spectacular efforts to make giant monsters like King Kong, Godzilla, The Giant Behemoth, Gorgo, and many other Japanese monster movies - of all of them - this is my favorite due to perfect balance of story, top shelf (for the time) special effects, total sufficiency of acting to enable the audience to not think of the movie as contrived nonsense - but an authentic news event (like "IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA") which is also a favorite of mine. This monster movie is a classic. It is not a "B movie" but a first-class effort of story, editing, visuals, dialogue - and sufficient change of scenery (not confined to one environment). The sister movie (very similar idea - "The Giant Behemoth") is not even close in terms of balance of elements and quality of those elements. This movie is worth having in your library in the "Old Fasion Monster Movies" section. I have never seen a monster or sci-fi movie I did not like that featured the actor "Kenneth Tobey" who starred in "It Came from Beneath the Sea" and the original version of "The Thing". Kenneth Tobey is like visiting with the polite and honest culture before America had ideological crisis - and his personality seems to represent a dead center perspective of what American culture was about in every film he is featured in.
