Reads like top tier literature with complex characters whose development is set within the context of the rise and fall of fascism in Italy, and the many complicated things that pull them apart and bring them together. Compelling, (and eminently likeable) multi dimensional characters, incredible performances (Matteo's frequent avoidance of eye contact is telling), gorgeous cinematography, and brilliant writing/storytelling that takes us on an incredible epic journey. 6 fascinating hours that will significantly enrich your life. And if you don't speak Italian, this will require a lot of subtitles to reading. And with a wordcount of 33,072 you could read all "Of Mice and Men" in fewer words than this movie. You could listen to an audio book of "the Great Gatsby" quicker than watching this film. Forgive me for referencing so many classic books, it's likely because this movie felt like homework to sit through. I don't like the characters.Looking through the numerous stories in this film, very few resonated with me. I didn't like Matteo's story, I didn't like Giorgia's story. Was there anything I did like? Well yeah, the acting, music and cinematography are well done throughout. Everything is really beautiful. And there are moments where I can see why this film is loved. But perhaps if they cut down the story and gave us something like "Best of The Best of Youth" See more Yash B @yashbansal Oct 1 "The Best of Youth" is a sprawling 6-hour journey that is well worth taking. I can confidently say that this is the longest film I have ever watched, and starting it felt like such a daunting task. The film is a beautiful story that spans multiple decades and engages the audience in these characters' lives. The movie is a mix of many emotions, both happy and sad, and it just feels so real. It is tough for a movie this long to be consistently entertaining or well-paced, but I found myself interested to see where it would go next most of the time. Overall, it is a truly ambitious piece of cinema that many will turn away from because of its enormous length, but those who decide to watch it will find themselves rewarded with a story full of humanity and heart. If I were given a day to live, I would ask only to see my children & wife, a sunrise, and the Best of Youth, before the end. I’d be ok to go then.
